Orwell, theatre, and martinis

Anyone interested?

GEORGE ORWELL'S CENTENARY BIRTHDAY BASH is a shindig staged to accomplish two things: 1) to celebrate the English author who brought us 1984 and Animal Farm and so on; 2) to raise funds for the production of a full-scale musical comedy based on that author's Road to Wigan Pier, helmed by the Chronicle's Robi Polgar (who seems to have figured that such a labor would be less daunting than attempting to transplant his own liver with a rusty spork while halfway up the north face of K-2 in the middle of winter with the yetis closing in). You needn't attend out of pity, however; this party's got great live music (the Late Joys), prize-packed games of Bingo (called in the fanciful English style by Mr. Paul Norton), and stirring readings from Orwell's oeuvre by local theatre luminaries. Yes, citizen, this fundraiser's definitely more equal than others. Monday, June 23, 6:30-10:30pm. The Lounge, 117 W. Fourth. $5 or more gladly accepted. 476-4059. rtwp2004@yahoo.com.
