Perhaps Kriston needs to reconsider that cynicism
A few days ago, Pakistan captured Ahmed Khalfan Ghailini, a senior al Qaeda figure wanted for the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa that killed hundreds of people. They announced the capture today, just hours before John Kerry gives his acceptance speech.
Kriston notes the fortunate timing for Republicans:

Certainly good news that just happens to fall on the night John Kerry gives what is anticipated to be a massively watched speech. I'll put it like this: If any channel that would be expected under other circumstances to air Kerry's speech chooses instead to lend time to talking heads to debate the impact of this capture, I'm going to feel extremely cynical about the timing.Kriston won't even have to wait for the speech. Kevin Drum reminds us about this article from the New Republic:
A third source, an official who works under ISI's (Pakistan' intelligence agency) director, Lieutenant General Ehsan ul-Haq, informed TNR that the Pakistanis "have been told at every level that apprehension or killing of HVTs before [the] election is [an] absolute must." ... But according to this ISI official, a White House aide told ul-Haq last spring that "it would be best if the arrest or killing of [any] HVT were announced on twenty-six, twenty-seven, or twenty-eight July" — the first three days of the Democratic National Convention in Boston. So nice to see that, when it comes to national security and reelection, the White House has its priorities in order.
