Unexpected delights of small-town radio
Temple has at least four Christian stations and probably just as many devoted to country music. Just today I got into the car to go to an assignment. The first thing I heard as I backed out of my space: "So-and-so here with a message of truth: Pagans hate Jesus because he keeps them from doing what they want to do; Christian love Jesus because he helps them to do what they want to do."
The radio down here is so bad that I've taken to listening to muzak covers of soft rocks songs on some channel called "Simply Beautiful." Hey, it's not annoying and they have pretty good news updates from the AP.
All of this wouldn't be so terrible if I weren't completely sick of my own CDs. So consider this an open thread to recommend new music. A note on my tastes: I'm not really down with this new movement toward '80s rawk. I'm looking for stuff more on the edges, or maybe the classics. For instance, Seemay recommended: Stephen Malkmus, Lil' Captain Travis, Dylan, and Devandra, and I liked those pretty well. But which albums to get? I'm also interested in some Billie Holliday-type stuff and jazz in the line of Miles, Monk, and Mingus.
And with that, I'll depart, leaving you with these lyrics from Brad Paisley, which I heard as I returned from that earlier assignment and which had me cracking up in my car:
To steal from one
person is plagiarism
To steal from many people
is research

"Little Moments Like That"Poor little thing. Sounds like just my kinda woman.
Well I’ll never forget the first time that I heard
That pretty mouth say that dirty word
And I can’t even remember now, what she backed my truck into
But she covered her mouth and her face got red and she just looked so darn cute
That I couldn’t even act like I was mad-
Yeah I live for little moments like that
That’s like just last year on my birthday
She lost all track of time and burnt the cake
And every smoke detector in the house was going off
She was just about the cry
Until I took her in my arms
And I tried not to let her see, me laugh-
Yeah I live for little moments like that
I know she’s not perfect, but she tries so hard for me
And I thank God that she isn’t
Cause how boring would that be?
It’s the little imperfections, it’s the sudden change in plans
When she misreads the directions and we’re lost
But holding hands-
Yeah I live for little moments like that
When she’s laying on my shoulder, on the sofa, in the dark
And about the time she falls asleep, so does my right arm
And I want so bad to move it, cause its tingling and its numb
But she looks so much like an angel,
That I don’t wanna wake her up-
Yeah I live for little moments-
When she steals my heart again and doesn’t even know it-
Yeah I live for little moments like that
