Time passes
It's time for the long-awaited, much-anticipated, highly debated, and slightly overrated update. My life, since I moved to Austin, in timeline form:
Aug. 21 — Move to Austin. The apartment people here at the luxurious and freshly remodeled Eastside Commons seem surprised by the giant U-Haul parked out back, despite plenty of advance warning of our momentous arrival.
Aug. 24 — One last trip to Temple to get the last of my stuff and turn in the keys.
Aug. 25 — I interview for a freelance photography position with a company here in town that develops corporate training and education "modules. Basically if you've ever had to do computer training at a new job, that kind of stuff. I get a one-hour portfolio slapped together for the event. Very professional.
Later that day, the boss calls to ask me to come in for a "test shoot" and, while we're here on the phone, name your going rate. I probably undersold myself, but it's still good money.
Aug. 25 — I return to the familiar land of Creditcardebtia to purchase studio lights, which I have to pretend to know how to use at the test shoot.
Aug. 29 — Test shoot is fun and stressful all at once, mainly because I get to pretend like I've ever done this type of thing before. I get the job.
Aug. 31 — Seemay arrives in Austin for a week-long visit.
Aug. 31 - Sept. 6 — Drunk.
Sept. 13 — I score my first freelance writing gig with a piece I call "Post-operative Orthodontic Pain Relief: A Survey." I receive a phat $350 for my brilliantly sparse prose.
Sept. 13 - 18 — Drugged.
Sept. 19 - 26 — Nothing much happens. I make myself apply for at least one job a day. Every job from reporter's assistant to the Washington Post to waiter in a fancy, shmancy Mexican restaurant to writer for a TV show about bad relationships fails to yield any leads.
Sept. 26 — Finally do my first work for the corporate company. Bank account rejoices.
Oct. 1 — I shoot a wedding. It kind of sucks, because the lady that subcontracted me still uses film. Film blows.
Oct. 6 — Fantasy basketball returns! Life improves exponentially.
Oct. 11 — Computer's hard drive crashes. A week is wasted trying to save it. Data back up takes 8 DVDs.
Oct. 15 — More corporate work. That day deserves its own post.
Oct. 17 — Out of nowhere the folks from my old copy editing job e-mail me.
Oct. 18 — I return as a temp to my mind-numbingly high paying old job. And it's flexible enough to let me continue to shoot photography stuff when I need to. I'm fucking set. At least until March.
Also on Tuesday, I snap the 10,000th frame on my camera since I picked it up on the 5th of August. That's about 130 frames a day. That's kind of incredible to me. Both the first frame and the 10,000th were of Amanda, coincidentally. Shit, I got some pictures to edit.
